An upstate New York high school football player died this week after his first day of practice.

Miguel Lugo, 17, suffered a medical emergency Monday evening at Wallkill High School, where he had been practicing with the varsity football team, the Times Herald-Record reported.

A person familiar with the incident said the linebacker collapsed following the squad’s first practice since COVID-19 precautions canceled their season, the Daily Freeman reported.

A 911 call was made around 8:35 p.m. about a man experiencing seizures in the lobby, the outlet reported.

Lugo was brought to the hospital, where he later died, the Herald-Record reported.

No cause of death has been released.

His aunt, Angela Morales, wrote on a GoFundMe page that his death was “unexpected.”

“He was a vibrant and healthy boy who lit up any room that he walked in. Now his family is left here to wonder why. Why Miguel. He had a heart of gold and anyone who knew him loved him dearly,” she wrote.

“We will never know why the Lord took him home so soon, clearly he needed an angel so he took one of the best,’ she continued.

Wallkill Central School District Superintendent Kevin Castle confirmed Lugo’s death in a letter to parents.

“I had the pleasure of knowing Miguel and when he saw me, he never hesitated to say hello,” Castle wrote in a letter obtained by the Daily Freeman.

“He was well-liked by both students and adults. The Wallkill Learning Community will truly miss Miguel.”
