August 2018 Newsletter
Back to School Month in August gears up parents, teachers, schools, and students for education.
With shorter days, it’s time to dust off the backpacks, fill them up and plan for a new school year. Preparing children for the new year includes everything from supplies, clothes, checkups, planning schedules and making new friends. Teachers develop their lesson plans and ready their classrooms for the new, smiling faces.
Whether you’re ready or not, friends, activities, and books are just around the corner. Get ready!

Back to School Safety Measures
This passionate blog article was written by a community member after the tragic loss of Allen Harris, Federal Way High School student who passed away during a pre-season football workout from sudden cardiac arrest. Allen Harris, 16, passed from an undetected heart condition known as HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).
"In 2018, there is no excuse for not having a formal, practiced response plan for SCA at your school, including on-site (indoor and outdoor) AEDs that allow retrieval and application within three minutes of someone’s collapse.
If your school does not have an AED program, please contact school leaders. Help them understand why this is so important. Help them fundraise. Reach out to local businesses for support. Partner with your PTA, school and district administration, school nurses and athletic trainers to understand what barriers exist and how to overcome them."
