Students in four Southeast Georgia counties were served during one-day event

Waycross, Georgia, Feb. 26, 2018SafeBeat, in collaboration with Wolfson Children’s Hospital of Jacksonville, Fla., provided free, preventative heart screenings to more than 200 middle- and high-school students on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Ware County High School in Waycross, Ga.

Students from Brantley, Charlton, Pierce and Ware counties received electrocardiograms (EKGs) to help detect underlying heart defects and prevent sudden cardiac death. Nearly 40 students received an additional cardiac screening known as an echocardiogram, including one who was found to have a cardiac tumor.

The students also had their medical history, blood pressure, and body-mass index (weight-to-height ratio) recorded. The results of the free screenings will help identify cardiac abnormalities, obesity and hypertension in students in grades fifth through 12 in these Southeast Georgia counties.

The SafeBeat Initiative does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. It detects cardiac abnormalities for further follow up with a physician or cardiologist. For more details, visit www.safebeat.org.
